Yankees go with Romine over Sanchez at catcher for Game 4

Troy Taormina / USA TODAY Sports

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi is taking no chances behind the plate in Game 4.

Austin Romine will catch starter Sonny Gray on Tuesday against the Houston Astros in the ALCS, with Gary Sanchez serving as the designated hitter.

Girardi told reporters that Gray, who has not pitched in 12 days, has better numbers pitching to Romine, and also wanted to take the opportunity to give Sanchez a bit of a breather. It's the first time Sanchez will not be the starting catching this postseason.

Sanchez has dealt with defensive issues this season, but recently his offensive woes have been on full display. He is 0-for-11 with five strikeouts during the ALCS, and 6-for-38 (.158) with two home runs and 15 strikeouts during the postseason.

The Yankees trail the Astros 2-1.
