Mets' Syndergaard touches 99 mph in 1st start since April

Robert Deutsch / USA TODAY Sports

Noah Syndergaard's first start since April was short and sweet.

The Mets' erstwhile and future ace didn't strike out any of the three Washington Nationals batters he faced in the top of the first inning, but his fastball topped out at 99 mph. Also of note, the first pitch he threw was a 94.5-mph slider.

Syndergaard allowed a single to Jayson Werth before erasing the baserunner on a double-play immediately afterward. While he didn't record a strikeout, the big right-hander needed only five pitches to get out of the inning. And like the team announced he would be on Friday, he was replaced by Matt Harvey after the lone inning of work.

It was a taste of what the team has been missing for most of the season, and what they hope he can bring to the table in 2018.
