The Milwaukee Brewers will have to make do without Jimmy Nelson for longer than just the stretch run.

After Nelson underwent scheduled surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder Wednesday, Brewers general manager David Stearns told Adam McCalvy of MLB.com that the right-hander will have to miss "a chunk" of the 2018 season while rehabbing from his injury.

The exact amount of time Nelson will miss next season has not been determined.

Nelson hurt his shoulder during his start on Sept. 8, when he dove back into first base while trying to avoid being picked off. He was later diagnosed with a rotator cuff strain and partially torn labrum, which immediately ended his season.

Before suffering the injuries, Nelson had been in the midst of the finest season of his five-year career, sporting a 3.49 ERA and 1.249 WHIP with 199 strikeouts across 175 1/3 innings for the surprising Brewers.
