Tigers' Boyd loses no-hitter with 2 outs in 9th inning

Matt Boyd's attempt at Detroit Tigers history fell one out short Sunday, as Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson sent a double to right field to end Boyd's no-hit bid with two outs in the ninth inning.

After getting Adam Engel to pop up in foul territory and Kevan Smith to ground out to second base, only Anderson stood in the way of the eighth no-hitter in Tigers history. With a 2-0 count, however, Anderson read Boyd's 79.9-mph changeup and slapped it into right field, splitting a chasing Nicholas Castellanos and JaCoby Jones.

Though his effort was undone in cruel fashion, Boyd remained in the game and retired Yoan Moncada in the next at-bat to preserve Detroit's 12-0 win. It's the first complete game the 26-year-old Boyd has thrown in his three-year career.

Former Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander owns the most recent no-hitter for the franchise, doing so on May 7, 2011, against the Toronto Blue Jays.
