If owning a rival club online was tantamount to winning a World Series title, the Chicago Cubs would be hoisting the Commissioner's Trophy right now.
Here's the deal: John Lackey, the famously fiery Cubs right-hander, went a bit nuts Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field, exploding on home-plate umpire Jordan Baker in the fifth inning when he didn't get a strike-three call on Carlos Martinez and getting ejected moments later (along with catcher Willson Contreras) after Martinez poked a go-ahead single into right.
Not surprisingly, the folks on the St. Louis Cardinals' social media team recognized Lackey's blow-up for the quality content it was, and, under the auspices of its club's 2-1 lead, decided to throw a little shade at the 38-year-old.
The burn was short-lived, though. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Cubs exploded for seven runs off Martinez and reliever Matt Bowman, grabbing an 8-2 lead that put them in the driver's seat, ownage-wise. Needless to say, their social media team didn't squander the chance to fire back.
