Rockies' Freeland exits after getting drilled by 115-mph line drive

Colorado Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland left Monday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fourth inning after absorbing a blistering line drive off the bat of J.D. Martinez.

The ball left Martinez's bat at 115 mph, according to Statcast, and struck the Rockies hurler in the upper arm. Freeland walked off under his own power and was diagnosed with a shoulder contusion, according to Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post.

The Rockies replaced their starter with fellow southpaw Tyler Anderson.

Freeland made it through three innings against the division-rival Diamondbacks, allowing one run on three hits and four walks while striking out one.

The Rockies activated Freeland off the disabled list in the middle of August after the 24-year-old sustained a groin injury earlier that month.

Through 27 starts and 149 2/3 innings this season, Freeland has posted a 3.97 ERA and 4.63 FIP.

Entering Monday's game against the Diamondbacks, the Rockies held the second National League wild-card spot and trailed Arizona by five games for the top WC berth.
