Report: Orioles have no plans to shop Machado

Evan Habeeb / USA TODAY Sports

It appears the Baltimore Orioles will enter 2018 with Manny Machado as their starting third baseman.

The Orioles have no intention of shopping the three-time All-Star during the offseason, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, but haven't decided whether they'll make another attempt to lock him up long term.

While owner Peter Angelos reportedly hasn't committed to an extension for Machado, Heyman's sources said Baltimore was "within $8 million or $9 million" of an extension a couple years back.

The two sides weren't especially close to a deal, a person familiar with the situation told Heyman.

Machado is in the midst of his worst offensive season since 2014, but he's still one of the game's best players, posting a .264/.318/.484 slash line with 32 home runs, 32 doubles, and 92 RBIs, while playing stellar defense at the hot corner with a plus-6 in defensive runs saved.

The 25-year-old slugger is making $11.5 million this season and is arbitration eligible in 2018 before becoming a free agent in 2019.
