Report: Jeter to earn $5M salary running Marlins' baseball ops

Adam Hunger / USA TODAY Sports

Derek Jeter appears ready to make a nice living in the Miami Marlins' front office.

The future Hall of Fame shortstop, who's expected to head up the Marlins' baseball operations department once his ownership group completes its purchase of the franchise, will reportedly earn an annual salary of $5 million, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell.

That figure would match what Jeter earned during the 1999 season - his fourth year with the New York Yankees, and the first time he had earned over $1 million in annual salary, according to Baseball-Reference.

All told, Jeter earned approximately $265,159,364 in salary during his 20-year playing career.

A group led by Jeter and billionaire Bruce Sherman won the bidding to purchase the Marlins from Jeffrey Loria earlier this month for $1.2 billion; the sale is expected to be approved by MLB owners in October. But while Jeter is the public face of the bid and plans to front much of the team's operations, he's reported to have only contributed $25 million of his own money to the bid itself.

Sherman is the major financier and would also be the "control person" in the new ownership group. He would represent the Marlins at ownership meetings assuming the deal goes through.

Although both current Marlins president David Samson - whose job status under the new regime may be in jeopardy - and commissioner Rob Manfred have stated the Jeter-Sherman group has the finances to complete the deal, a report Thursday suggested they may still be searching for investors despite having already won the bidding.
