Report: Blue Jays 'open' to signing Estrada to extension

Marco Estrada could be spending a lot more time north of the border.

Despite being claimed on revocable trade waivers, the Toronto Blue Jays decided to keep the 34-year-old veteran and, according to Robert Murray of FanRag Sports, the club has interest in signing Estrada to a contract extension in the offseason.

"The player loves Toronto, the agent says publicly he doesn’t want to go anywhere," Murray's source within the Blue Jays organization said.

"Frankly, we are open to extending him."

The New York Yankees were the team that claimed Estrada, league sources told FanRag Sports on Sunday.

However, the Blue Jays had no plans to deal the right-hander unless the front office was blown away with an offer. As such, the Yankees reportedly claimed Estrada in order to block the veteran from other interested parties.

Prior to the trade deadline, the Kansas City Royals were linked to Estrada, along with the St. Louis Cardinals, Murray notes.

The 34-year-old is currently in his third full season in Toronto. He's in the final year of a two-year, $26-million extension he signed in 2015. Despite his struggles this season, Estrada has provided the Blue Jays with great value as a starter, combining to a 3.82 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with eight strikeouts per nine innings in 82 starts.
