Machado, Rizzo named Players of the Week

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado and Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo were named the American and National League Players of the Week, respectively, on Monday, the league announced.

In six games, Machado hit .385/.370/.885 with four home runs and 12 RBIs. The torrid stretch included a three-home run performance Friday, with his last of the night being a walk-off grand slam. After a slow start to the season, Machado has picked it up significantly in August, hitting .361/.353/.735 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs entering Monday.

Meanwhile, the 28-year-old Rizzo hit an electric .429/.484/.750 in seven games at Wrigley Field last week, including a pair of home runs and 13 RBIs in 28 at-bats. Much like Machado, Rizzo's month of August has been terrific, to the tune of .324/.390/.527 in 19 games.
