Report: Red Sox open to 1st-base upgrade

The Boston Red Sox search for offensive help isn't limited to third base.

In addition to hoping to land help at the hot corner, Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is also reportedly looking across the diamond at first base.

The Red Sox hope that top prospect Rafael Devers can take over at third base following his call-up Monday. But first baseman Mitch Moreland has been struggling over the past month, leaving the club open to making an upgrade at the position, a source told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

Following a strong start to the season, Moreland is hitting just .155/.233/.252 with three home runs, one double and 28 strikeouts over his last 30 games. He's been attempting to play through a fractured toe, which could be the root of his troubles at the plate.

The Red Sox head into play Tuesday with a narrow lead in the American League East and are in desperate need of offense. They're 5-7 since the All-Star break and have combined for a .661 team OPS this month, good for second-worst in the majors.

Lucas Duda, Yonder Alonso, and Mike Napoli are all potential options that could be available at first base.
