Red Sox acquire Nunez from Giants

The Boston Red Sox may have finally found their third baseman.

Boston has acquired utility man Eduardo Nunez from the San Francisco Giants, the team announced on Tuesday night.

San Francisco will receive minor-league pitchers Shaun Anderson and Gregory Santos from the Red Sox in return.

Nunez started at third base for the Giants Tuesday night, but was pulled for a pinch-hitter prior to his third at-bat. He was then seen hugging his now former teammates in the dugout, immediately sparking speculation of an impending trade.

The Red Sox are hoping Nunez can finally solve what's been a revolving door at the hot corner this season. Seven different players - not including top prospect Rafael Devers, who made his major-league debut at the position Tuesday night in Seattle - have manned third base for John Farrell's club this season; together, those seven players have combined to post a meager .595 OPS and hit just seven home runs.

By Wins Above Replacement, Red Sox third basemen have accumulated minus-0.8 fWAR - tied with Philadelphia for the worst production at the position in all of baseball.

The 30-year-old Nunez is hitting .307/.331/.413 with four homers, 20 doubles, and 17 stolen bases in 75 games for the Giants this season. Although he'll likely become the Red Sox primary third baseman, Nunez is capable of playing all over the diamond; so far this year he's played 48 games at the hot corner, 19 in left field, 11 at shortstop, and two in right field.

Nunez will be a free agent at season's end, and is owed approximately $1.5 million over the balance of this season, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.
