Yankees trade Refsnyder to Blue Jays for McBroom

The Toronto Blue Jays will likely head into the non-waiver deadline as sellers next week, but that didn't stop them from making a deal Sunday that could help the club this season.

Toronto traded minor-league first baseman Ryan McBroom to the New York Yankees in exchange for utility man Rob Refsnyder.

The 26-year-old Refsnyder was the Yankees' fourth-best prospect going into the 2015 season, but has fallen down the depth chart in recent years before ultimately seeing his time in pinstripes come to an end Wednesday after he was designated for assignment.

Despite excelling in the minors, Refsnyder hasn't been able to put things together at the major-league level. He's hit .312/.390/.464 with two home runs and 11 doubles in 38 games in Triple-A this season, but is slashing .135/.200/.216 with two extra-base hits in 20 games with the Yankees.

Refsnyder, who will report to Triple-A Buffalo, gives the Blue Jays added depth at a number of positions. He's appeared defensively at first base, second base, right field, and left field this season, and has one appearance at third base in the majors.

McBroom has spent the entire year in Double-A, hitting .243/.321/.402 with 12 home runs and 19 doubles in 96 games.
