Arrieta downplays tension with Montero: 'I'm not upset'

Brad Mills / USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs cut ties with catcher Miguel Montero on Wednesday after he ripped his pitching staff's ability to hold runners, notably Tuesday night's starter Jake Arrieta.

Despite Montero's flammable comments, Arrieta isn't one to hold a grudge. He told reporters that Montero apologized, according to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat.

"I told him I'm not upset or mad," Arrieta said.

The right-hander added that the locker room atmosphere would not have been a problem had the team not designated Montero for assignment, the Chicago Sun-Times' Gordon Wittenmyer reports.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon didn't agree.

"Regardless of what Jake said regarding Miggy that it would not have impacted the clubhouse, I think it would have," Maddon said. "Too many young guys."
