Report: Phillies' Herrera fined by manager for latest baserunning gaffe

Things keep going from bad to worse for Odubel Herrera and the Philadelphia Phillies.

The team already sports the worst record in the majors, and Herrera has struggled in almost every aspect of the game this season. His gaffes have caught up with him, as Phillies manager Pete Mackanin reportedly fined Herrera an unknown amount for an incident in Saturday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, sources told CSN Philly's Jim Salisbury.

The incident in question was reportedly when Herrera was caught trying to steal second base in the sixth inning. The Phillies were trailing by a run, and his failed attempt ended the frame. As well, Mackanin had reportedly given Herrera the red light before the play, which the outfielder disobeyed.

"Baserunning matters," Mackanin said Monday when asked about the fine, which he neither confirmed nor denied.

Saturday's incident wasn't even the only baserunning error Herrera has committed in the past week. He also ran through a stop sign at third on Wednesday and was caught dead to rights while trying to score - for which he was removed from the game.

Herrera has looked better at the plate in June, batting .333 with 13 doubles, but mistakes on the basepaths have overshadowed his forward strides.
