Dodgers' Urias to have shoulder surgery, miss 12-14 months

After being sidelined since May 21 with a shoulder injury in his pitching arm, Julio Urias will undergo left anterior capsule surgery Tuesday, the Los Angeles Dodgers announced Friday.

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman told reporters that Urias will miss 12-to-14 months following the surgery, but that he may be able to pitch at some point in 2018.

The surgery will be performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

Among notable pitchers to have undergone the same surgery is former two-time AL Cy Young winner Johan Santana. After requiring the surgery during his age-31 season in 2010, Santana managed just 117 more major-league innings - all of which came in 2012.

Urias has been on the disabled list since his demotion following a rough outing against the Miami Marlins, in which the 20-year-old allowed six earned runs on seven hits and three walks in just 2 1/3 innings of work.

After making the majors as a teenager in 2016, Urias posted a 3.39 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over 77 innings as a 19-year-old. Since then, though, the young phenom has struggled, putting up a 5.40 ERA through his five major-league starts this season.
