Watch: Scherzer loses no-hitter in 8th inning on bloop deflection

Jasen Vinlove / USA TODAY Sports

Washington Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer was only five outs away from recording his third career no-hitter Wednesday. All it took to ruin the party was a lazy A.J. Ellis hit up the middle that deflected off Scherzer's glove.

Having a no-hitter late in the game is nothing new for Scherzer. This was the 11th time in 82 starts with the Nationals where he hadn't allowed a hit through five innings, according to the Sporting News' Ryan M. Spaeder.

With only a 1-0 lead, things took a disastrous turn. Scherzer loaded the bases with two outs and allowed his first run of the game on a wild pitch to Giancarlo Stanton. He allowed another run on a hit by Stanton later in the at-bat, going from potential no-hitter to being in position to lose the game in a matter of minutes.

The Nationals would fail to recapture the lead in the ninth, allowing the Miami Marlins to win 2-1 despite tallying only two hits.
