Wife of Cubs' Russell files for divorce, won't speak to MLB investigators

Melissa Russell - the wife of Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell - has filed for divorce, her attorneys confirmed Wednesday, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

The news comes two weeks after Addison Russell was accused of domestic violence on social media, prompting Major League Baseball to begin investigating the matter.

In an email statement obtained by WSCR 670 AM's "Spiegel & Parkins Show," Melissa's attorneys said their client won't speak with MLB investigators about the allegations against her husband.

"Mrs. Russell has declined the invitation from Major League Baseball to be interviewed relative to social media postings and allegations of domestic violence," the statement from Beermann Pritikin Mirabelli Swerdlove LLP read. "It is her desire to pursue a resolution that is, first and foremost, in the best interest of the parties' son, and which occurs in a swift, amicable, and private fashion."

In a since-deleted Instagram caption posted June 7, Melissa seemed to imply her marriage was coming to an end, writing that she'd been "cheated on, lied to, and disrespected." A comment on the post by a woman identified as a friend of Melissa's accused Addison of mentally and physically abusing his wife in front of their two children.

Addison called the allegations "false and hurtful" in a statement to the press the following day.

The 23-year-old All-Star did not speak to reporters ahead of the Cubs' Wednesday afternoon game against the San Diego Padres, according to CBS Chicago. He's listed as the Cubs' cleanup hitter for the game.
