Report: Nationals eyeing Madson, Wilson as bullpen targets
Dusty Baker's cries for bullpen help could be solved with the assistance of two American League clubs.
The Washington Nationals reportedly view Detroit Tigers left-hander Justin Wilson and Oakland Athletics right-hander Ryan Madson as two "prime bullpen targets," according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
Washington holds an 11-game lead in the National League East in spite of its bullpen. Nationals relievers own a 5.21 ERA this season - the second-worst mark in the majors - and have blown 11 of 31 save opportunities.
Madson is almost certain to be traded prior to the non-waiver deadline with the Athletics owning the worst record in the AL. The 36-year-old has posted a 2.73 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 28 strikeouts across 26 1/3 innings. He's under contract through next season at $7.66 million.
It's unknown if the Tigers are willing to blow up their roster with the team still in contention in both the division and wild card. Should they sell, Rosenthal believes Wilson will be in high demand. The 29-year-old owns a 2.67 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 39 strikeouts in 27 innings. Wilson is arbitration eligible for a third and final time next season before hitting free agency.
