Report: Red Sox have 'limited' interest in signing Peralta

Jerry Lai / USA TODAY Sports

Despite a desperate need for help at third base, Boston Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski isn't jumping at the opportunity to sign Jhonny Peralta.

Released by the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday, Peralta is currently a free agent, though the Red Sox reportedly have "limited" interest in adding him to the roster in Triple-A Pawtucket, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

Dombrowski is plenty familiar with Peralta dating back to their time with the Detroit Tigers. Dombrowski traded for the infielder in 2010 and Peralta went on to make two All-Star appearances with the Tigers.

Peralta, however, isn't the same player now that he was in Detroit. He's appeared in just 21 games this season, hitting .204/.259/.204 with no extra-base hits and 13 strikeouts. He's capable of playing multiple positions, though he isn't known as a strong defender.

Josh Rutledge is currently serving as the Red Sox starting third baseman with Pablo Sandoval coming off the bench. Defensive stalwart Deven Marrero filled in with Sandoval on the disabled list, but was recently sent back down to Triple-A. Boston's third basemen have combined for -1.0 WAR this season.
