Report: Cubs demote Schwarber to Triple-A

Jake Roth / USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs are hoping a stint in the minor leagues will be the remedy for Kyle Schwarber's woes at the plate, as the club is sending the outfielder to its Triple-A affiliate in Iowa, according to CSN Chicago's David Kaplan.

Kaplan notes Schwarber's minor-league stint isn't expected to be a lengthy one, though it should provide an opportunity for the slugger to "clear his head."

Despite emerging as a surprise hero for the Cubs in their World Series run in 2016, Schwarber has struggled offensively this season, slashing .171/.295/.378 in 222 at-bats in 2017.

Along with Schwarber's demotion, the Cubs are also reportedly placing Jason Heyward on the 10-day DL with a hand injury. Outfielder Mark Zagunis and pitcher Dylan Floro were recalled in corresponding roster moves, sources told CSN Chicago's Patrick Mooney.
