Cubs, Pirates to commemorate 'Negro Leagues Heritage Game'
When the Chicago Cubs travel to PNC Park in Pittsburgh on Friday, the club will join the Pirates in celebrating their annual "Negro Leagues Heritage Game."
According to MLB, the Pirates will don commemorative Homestead Grays jerseys, while the Cubs will honor the Leland Giants, who became the first Negro League team to play a three-game series against the Cubs back in 1909.
This year will mark the seventh time the Pirates pay tribute to the Grays, a tradition started in 2006. The Washington Nationals have also honored the Grays several times throughout their history.
The Grays were formed in 1912 and played out of Homestead, Penn. The team won six consecutive pennants from 1937 through 1942 and two more in 1945 and 1948 - a year in which they advanced to the Negro League World Series Championship.
