Blue Jays falter again during quest to reach .500
The Toronto Blue Jays just can't get over the hump.
As remarkable as their revitalization has been this season following a franchise-worst start, reaching the .500-mark remains elusive.
The club had an eighth opportunity to get back to .500 on Tuesday, and as has been the case for the entire year, the opportunity was wasted in a 6-1 drubbing at the hands of the Texas Rangers.
Reaching the summit, and getting over the hump, has been one of the more challenging parts of the Blue Jays season. Toronto has been outscored a whopping 62-20 in those eight attempts to reach .500.
DATE | OPPONENT | RESULT | RECORD |
---|---|---|---|
April 5 | BAL | 3-1 | 0-2 |
April 7 | TB | 10-8 | 1-3 |
June 1 | NYY | 12-2 | 26-28 |
June 3 | NYY | 7-0 | 27-29 |
June 5 | OAK | 5-3 | 28-30 |
June 13 | TB | 8-1 | 31-33 |
June 16 | CWS | 11-4 | 32-34 |
June 20 | TEX | 6-1 | 34-36 |
Sitting at 34-36 entering play Wednesday, the Blue Jays will need to take the final two games in Texas if they wish to head into a weekend series with the Kansas City Royals even in the win-loss column.
"We'll get over the hump. It's just a matter of time," outfielder Steve Pearce said following Tuesday's loss, according to Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.
Despite their struggles to break even, the Blue Jays sit just five back in the American League East and two games out of the second wild-card spot. With the non-waiver trade deadline six weeks away, they'll likely need to surpass the .500 mark soon in order to give the front office confidence that the team can compete for a postseason spot.
