Playoff Percentages: Rockies, Angels back in win column as Cardinals falter

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Through the remainder of the regular season, we'll take a look at how the night's action impacted the playoff races, highlighting which teams' postseason odds went up or down significantly.

American League

Thanks to a much-needed standout performance from the middle of the lineup, the Los Angeles Angels got the monkey off their backs, ending their six-game losing streak against the Houston Astros.

The win barely keeps the Halos alive, though, as the Minnesota Twins continued their surge for the final wild-card spot by sweeping the Detroit Tigers 10-4 on Sunday, the first time a team from Minny has done that at Comerica Park since 2004.

With the Twins' magic number down to 3, the AL's postseason picture is all but set.

Team Result Playoff Pct Change
Twins W 10-4 vs. Tigers 99% +2.6%
Angels W 7-5 vs. Astros 0.9% -0.5%
Rangers L 8-1 vs. Athletics 0.1% -1.2%

National League

With a win Sunday, the Arizona Diamondbacks became the seventh team to clinch a postseason berth, and with the Cubs all but guaranteed to conquer the Central, the NL's second wild-card spot will come down to the wire.

Rookie right-hander German Marquez picked up his 11th win for the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, though credit must be given to a bullpen led by Pat Neshek, Jake McGee, Carlos Estevez, and Greg Holland, who combined to pitch three scoreless innings.

The Rockies saw the biggest boost in their playoff odds, as the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals failed to keep up in the wild-card chase. All three clubs begin crucial home stands, though the Cardinals will be tasked with the greatest challenge, going up against the division-leading Chicago Cubs. The Rockies welcome the Miami Marlins, while the Brewers take on the Cincinnati Reds.

Team Result Playoff Pct Change
Rockies W 8-4 vs. Padres 76.5% +23.3%
Brewers L 5-0 vs. Cubs 13.2% -12%
Cardinals L 4-1 vs. Pirates 10.4% -12.1%
