Look: Padres use huge outfield shift against Rockies' LeMahieu

During a Monday evening matchup against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, the San Diego Padres put on a massive outfield shift against second baseman DJ LeMahieu.

The shift is a growing trend in baseball, though infield shifts are the ones most implemented now, with outfield shifts - especially ones like these - much less frequent.

While it may look strange, according to data from Baseball Savant, it actually looks like the Padres and manager Andy Green might be on to something.

The batted balls to look at the most when evaluating a shift are mostly the fly balls, though line drives should factor in slightly as well. And, apart from a couple outliers down the left-field line, LeMahieu does seem to spray the outfield almost exclusively to center and to right. It's a pretty noteworthy spray chart for a right-handed batter to have.

The at-bat ended with the 2016 National League batting champion grounding out to the shortstop.
