The Major League Baseball regular season may have gotten underway Sunday afternoon at Tropicana Field, but the instant replay system is still in spring training mode.
One half-inning into the opener between the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays, a technical issue with the Yankees' replay system resulted in both clubs receiving unlimited crew-chief reviews after initial challenges.
The Yankees lost their first challenge of the game on a close play at first base for the final out of the opening frame. Umpire Marvin Hudson ruled Matt Holliday out and the call was upheld following a request for review by Yankees manager Joe Girardi.
The unlimited-challenge announcement came after the top of the first inning, though it's not known whether the disputed call was a result of faulty replay.
