Puerto Rico faces hair dye shortage after fans imitate WBC squad

It seems fans in Puerto Rico are just dyeing to get on the World Baseball Classic bandwagon.

Support of Puerto Rico's national team at the WBC as it runs to the final has reached a fever pitch back on the island, where fans of all ages have begun emulating their heroes by dying their hair, and even beards, blonde to match the team's now iconic look of unity. They've been so eager, in fact, that the territory is now about to run out of the product.

Yes, baseball has left the entire island of Puerto Rico facing a mass shortage of blonde hair dyes, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.

"Ever since they began winning, this has not stopped," Myrna Rios, who manages a San Juan-based salon, told the AP. "We have run out of the product in most of our stores."

According to the AP, every different shade of hair dye close enough to blonde - including some shades of orange - are now in low supply. But that hasn't stopped anyone with a vested interest in the team from proudly continuing the trend that's suddenly become a trademark of Puerto Rican baseball.

"We have been able to unite our country with our blond hair," infielder Carlos Correa said. "That's what we want as players to unite our country, our people, and give them the best."
