Mariners' Yovani Gallardo: To start third exhibition game
Gallardo, the Mariners' fifth starter, will open Monday's Cactus League matchup versus the Royals, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
Analysis:
The 30-year-old righty will begin his quest to put last season, the worst of his 10-year major league career, behind him. Gallardo battled shoulder problems and biceps tendinitis on his way to a career-worst 5.42 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in what was his sole Orioles campaign. Now reportedly at full health after an offseason of targeted strengthening exercises for his scapula, the veteran could serve as an inning-eating, better-than-average option at the back end of the 2017 rotation.
