Nationals, Mets among teams interested in Romo

Ed Szczepanski / USA TODAY Sports

Sergio Romo is getting interest this offseason from a number of clubs.

Appearing with Casey Stern on MLB Network Radio, the former San Francisco Giants closer said the Washington Nationals and New York Mets are on the list on teams showing interest in him.

Romo was the Giants' closer for the 2013 and 2014 seasons, but lost the job in 2015.

Last year, he posted a 2.64 ERA over 30 2/3 innings. In nine major-league seasons, all with the Giants, he owns a 2.58 ERA and was an All-Star in 2013.

What's interesting about the Nationals and Mets is, should they sign Romo, it would be for different purposes.

The Nationals are still without a closer after losing Mark Melancon to free agency, and striking out on the other closers on the market.

Meanwhile, the Mets already have Jeurys Familia, and while he's the closer, he'll miss part of the regular season as he faces a suspension related to a domestic violence case.

In the event Romo joins New York, he'd likely be the closer until Familia is reinstated, and depending how he does, it's expected he would slide into a setup role.
