A-Rod working out at 1B over All-Star break
While other big leaguers are either in San Diego participating in All-Star festivities or using the time off as a vacation, Alex Rodriguez is putting in work.
As the first half of the season came to a close, the New York Yankees slugger found himself in a familiar spot - on the bench. Proving he's more than just a bat, Rodriguez is working out at first base.
Rodriguez is also expected to work with infield coach Joe Espada beginning on Friday.
"I was told he was more open to playing the field," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told reporters. "Last year he was opposed to it."
Over his 22 seasons, Rodriguez has only played 9 2/3 innings of first base, and he made one error.
But being a designated hitter decreases his value and versatility, especially considering his struggles at the plate. It also doesn't help he's been out of the lineup nine times over the last 10 games.
"I don't think anybody knows," Cashman said when asked if A-Rod will play first this season.
A shortstop by trade, Rodriguez was converted to third base when he signed with the Yankees, playing beside Derek Jeter.
