Nationals place Zimmerman on DL, recall Taylor
The Washington Nationals have placed struggling first baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list. The club also optioned Lucas Giolito to Triple-A, and recalled outfielder Michael Taylor and utility man Trea Turner.
Zimmerman's having the worst campaign of his 12-year career, batting .221/.284/.402 with 12 homers in 74 games.
Taylor returns to the bigs after being demoted earlier in the week. Despite his overall numbers, it came as a shock to see him sent down given the fact he batted .310/.355/.500 with two homers and five doubles in June.
Behind Giolito, Turner's the No. 2 ranked prospect in the Nationals' organization. He's made the most of his two games in the majors this season, going 3-for-4 with one double and one walk.
After a solid major-league debut, Giolito was touched up for four runs on two homers and four walks over 3 2/3 innings Thursday against the New York Mets.
