Royals' Edinson Volquez: Pitches 6.2 shutout innings in no-decision against the Cardinals
Volquez didn't allow a run in 6.2 innings but settled for a no-decision in an extra-inning victory against the Cardinals on Wednesday. He also yielded six hits, struck out four and walked one.
Analysis:
This was an ideal bounce-back game for Volquez after he allowed 12 runs (11 earned) in just one inning against Houston in his last outing. Three of the six hits Volquez yielded Wednesday were infield singles, so he pretty much kept all the Cardinals hitters in check. He threw 64 of his 104 pitches for strikes and induced 16 swing-and-misses. His control was excellent, as it was also just the second time in six outings that he didn't walk at least two batters. Volquez remains 7-7 but drops his ERA to 4.80 and WHIP to 1.43. His next start will be Monday against the Blue Jays.
