USA Baseball names Joe Torre GM for WBC
After managing Team USA in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, Joe Torre is returning as the team's general manager.
"I'm excited to be involved again," Torre said in a release. "I had a taste of international play in 2013 and was disappointed that we didn't advance further. I'm going to do everything I can to build the right team and help Jim Leyland take us to the next level."
In 2011, Torre became MLB's executive vice president for baseball operations, and, that title has since evolved into his current role of Chief Baseball Officer.
The U.S. has yet to win the WBC crown, and the farthest the team has made it was a semifinal appearance in the 2009 tournament. The final WBC qualifier will be held in September in New York, and will host Brazil, Great Britain, Israel and Pakistan.
The winner of that draw will join Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Mexico, Puerto Rico, United States, and Venezuela in the tournament.
Team USA will be managed by former Detroit Tigers skipper Jim Leyland. On his staff will be Jeff Jones, Marcel Lachemann, Lloyd McClendon, Willie Randolph, and Alan Trammell.
A final roster for Team USA has not been finalized.
