Marlins take high school lefty Braxton Garrett at No. 7
The Miami Marlins selected hard-throwing high school pitcher Braxton Garrett, a left-hander out of Alabama, with the seventh overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft on Thursday.
The southpaw is considered to have one of the best curveballs in the draft, and he could project as a top-of-the-rotation arm, according to scouts. At 6-foot-3, Garrett, a Vanderbilt commit, throws high 80s and has good command of his secondary stuff. From ESPN Insider Eric Longenhagen:
This spring, Garrett has been sitting 90-93 mph with some sink and showing the best present curveball of any prep lefty not named Jason Groome. The curve is a true 12-6 hammer with sharp break and good depth and is consistently average now - with a chance to be plus.
Under MLB draft spending rules, the Brewers can use up to $3,756,300 of their $6,445,900 allotted bonus pool on the No. 7 pick without being penalized.
