Vin Scully, the legendary voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers, delivered perhaps the most unfortunate news of his on-air career Friday, when the Hall of Fame broadcaster announced the death of the iconic heavyweight champion, Muhammad Ali.

Scully shared the tragic news during the Dodgers' game against the Braves when Chase d'Arnaud stepped to the plate as the first batter in the top of the eighth inning.

"We have just received distressing news, although there were a lot of people who were figuring we were coming close to the end," Scully said.

"We understand right now that Muhammad Ali, the former Cassius Clay, has passed away."

Ali's death was first announced by family spokesman Bob Gunnell in a statement late Friday after the 74-year-old boxing legend was hospitalized Thursday due to a respiratory issue.

A funeral service will take place in Ali's hometown of Louisville, Ky.
