Scully compares Trout to Yankees legend Mantle

It's Vin Scully's final season in the booth, and people are essentially hanging onto every word he says.

On Wednesday, those words amounted to a ringing endorsement of Mike Trout.

The Los Angeles Angels' superstar is, alongside Washington's Bryce Harper, the face of baseball. Scully suggested something more, though, putting him a step above one of the greatest to ever play the game.

"Trout, all smiles in the dugout, great looking ball player," Scully said after Trout blasted a towering home run to left field. "Bigger than (Mickey) Mantle, sometimes bigger than life."

That's right: Not only did Scully compare Trout to the New York Yankees legend - who also happens to be a 16-time All-Star, three-time MVP, and Hall of Famer - but he said he was better than him.

Despite the mountain Scully stuck Trout next to, it's not unfathomable that the Angels slugger could one day see his name enshrined in Cooperstown.

Player Age G R HR RBI BA/OBP/SLG
Trout 19-23 744 477 139 397 .304/.397/.559
Mantle 19-23 719 510 121 445 .298/.400/.528

It's probably too early to say that, but as Scully watched the next hitter - Albert Pujols - walk up to the plate, he began to see the similarities in just how incredible both players are.

Pujols is, of course, one of the greatest the game has ever seen. With a lifetime .310/.395/.577 slash line, 568 homers, and more than 1700 RBIs, he's a definite Hall of Famer.

Still, Scully believes Trout should be in the same conversation.

"Albert Pujols, a legend," Scully concluded, "and Mike Trout, soon to be."
