 These teams last met in St. Louis in the season's opening weekend, with the Pirates avoiding a sweep with a 5-1 win in the series finale. Pittsburgh has not won consecutive games over the Cardinals since May 11 and 12, 2019; since then, St. Louis has won 13 of 16 games between the clubs.

 After scoring 24 runs and hitting .352 in a three-game sweep of the Brewers last weekend in Pittsburgh, the Bucs' bats went silent against the White Sox. Pittsburgh dropped both games on the South Side, getting no-hit by Lucas Giolito on Tuesday and managing only six hits in a 10-3 loss on Wednesday.

 The Redbirds have won four of their last five games, outscoring their opponents by a 28-15 margin. Since August 19, St. Louis is averaging 5.11 runs over a nine-game stretch despite hitting only five home runs. The team's average of 0.56 homers in that span is tied with Miami for the lowest in MLB.

 Gregory Polanco is hitting .136 with eight hits and 31 strikeouts. He is the only player in MLB to have fewer than 10 hits and 30-plus whiffs in 2020.

 Over his last 11 games, Paul Goldschmidt is hitting .333 with 16 walks -- at least one in each game -- for a .553 on-base percentage. His streak of 11 straight games with a walk is the longest in MLB this season. In the last 100 years, only Jack Clark (16 games in 1987) has had a longer streak for St. Louis.

 The Cardinals rank last in MLB in 2020 with 17 home runs; the Pirates rank 27th with 25 longballs. But St. Louis does a much better job of getting on base; the Cards rank third in the majors with a .343 on-base percentage, while Pittsburgh is dead last with a .276 mark.

ST. LOUIS (AP)  Erik Gonzalez and Adam Frazier singled in runs, rookie Cody Ponce earned his first big league victory and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 Thursday night for a doubleheader sweep.
Cole Tucker drove in the go-ahead run in extra innings in the Pirates' 4-3 win in the opener.
