 Seattle holds a 16-11 edge in the all-time series with the Diamondbacks, and took two of three games from them in Arizona the last time they met in August 2018. The Mariners are 4-8 versus NL opponents this year, with a 6.41 team ERA (15-16 with 4.93 ERA vs. AL).

 The Mariners were swept in a two-game set at San Francisco this week, snapping their six-game winning streak. Wednesday's 10-1 loss was Seattle's sixth road game this year allowing double-digit runs; no other MLB team has more than three such games.

 Arizona is 3-18 in its last 21 games, losing seven consecutive series. That's tied for the longest series losing streak within a season in franchise history, with seven-series skids in both 2004 and 2005.

 Christian Walker has a .450/.452/.625 slash line in 10 games as the designated hitter this year, compared to .221/.292/.434 in 33 games at first base. He hasn't served as Arizona's DH since August 26.

 Kyle Seager has 27 homers and 103 RBI in his career in interleague games, both the most all-time by a Mariner. The only players to match both of those totals in interleague play since Seager's first career season in 2012 are Nolan Arenado, Nelson Cruz and Freddie Freeman.

 Yusei Kikuchi has won back-to-back starts -- walking none in both outings -- after opening the season 0-2 in four starts with 10 walks in 20.0 innings (4.5 BB/9). He has an 8.78 ERA this year in three starts during the day, compared to 2.55 in three starts at night.

The Seattle Mariners begin a rare visit to the desert Friday when they take on the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opener of a three-game series at Chase Field in Phoenix.
The rebuilding Mariners (19-24) have played themselves into the hunt for both second place in the American League West, which comes with a postseason berth, and the second American League wild-card spot. They're only two games behind the Houston Astros in the division and three behind the New York Yankees for the wild card, with 17 games left on the Seattle schedule.

PHOENIX (AP)  Caleb Smith had a miserable start to the abbreviated 2020 season, but it didn't have anything to do with his performance on the field. Instead, he was one of more than a dozen Miami Marlins who was quarantining in separate small hotel rooms after testing positive for COVID-19.
Six weeks and one trade to the Diamondbacks later, he had his successful return.
