 The Padres hit 56 home runs last month, shattering their previous franchise record for home runs in a calendar month (47 in May 1970). Since August 1, 59.1 percent of San Diego's runs have come via the home run, second highest in MLB behind Cincinnati (64.1 percent).

 After winning three in a row for the first time this season, the Angels dropped back-to-back games to the Mariners, both 2-1 defeats. At 12-24 now, this is their second-worst start to a season in franchise history behind 1969 (11-25).

 Jake Cronenworth leads all rookies in batting average (.356) and OPS (1.034) this season (min. 100 PA). That .356 average is the highest by any Padre in his first 31 career games in franchise history (min. 100 PA), while his 1.034 OPS thru 31 games is second in franchise history (Christian Villanueva, 1.179).

 David Fletcher is hitting .433 with runners in scoring position this season, including going 6-for-8 in such opportunities since August 24. That ranks fourth in MLB (minimum 30 plate appearances) behind Ryan O'Hearn (.462), Donovan Solano (.452) and Fernando Tatis Jr. (.440).

 Newly acquired Padre Mike Clevinger is one of four pitchers since 2017 (min. 400 innings) with a sub-3.00 ERA (2.97) and a home run per nine rate under 1.00 (0.94), along with Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom and Corey Kluber. Scherzer, deGrom and Kluber have each won at least one Cy Young in that time while Clevinger has never received a vote for the award.

Mike Clevinger will be on the mound Thursday afternoon in Anaheim, Calif., making his debut for the San Diego Padres against the team that originally drafted him, the Los Angeles Angels.
Clevinger, who was traded from the Cleveland Indians to the Padres in a deadline deal on Monday, will make his second start since he was placed on the restricted list by the Indians for breaking COVID-19 protocols in early August.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)  Mike Clevinger has commanded the most attention among pitchers throughout the majors for the past week, but it was Andrew Heaney who ruled the mound Thursday.
The Angels right-hander allowed only three hits over seven innings in Los Angeles' 2-0 victory over San Diego, spoiling Clevinger's debut with the Padres.
