 The Royals split their last two games in which each game was decided by one run. They have played in 11 one-run games this season, tied for third most in baseball behind only the Rockies (13) and Blue Jays (12). They are just 4-7 in such games.

 The White Sox swept their two games against the Pirates which included a no-hitter by Lucas Giolito on Tuesday. Since August 16, the Sox are an MLB-best 9-1 while having a 2.02 ERA, by far the lowest in that time (Reds are second at 2.83).

 Chicago swept Kansas City earlier this season, outscoring the Royals, 23-9. Kansas City's starters posted an 8.10 ERA in that series while the White Sox hit .328 as a team.

 With a three-hit game on Wednesday, Whit Merrifield boosted his batting average up to .301 on the season. This would be the third straight season where he has hit above .300. He could be the fifth qualified player in Royals history to bat at least .300 in three consecutive seasons, joining Mike Sweeney (1999-2002), George Brett (1975-77; 1979-83), Willie Wilson (1979-82) and Hal McRae (1974-76).

 Jose Abreu has eight home runs, 17 RBI, and a 1.889 OPS in his last eight games. He and Nelson Cruz from July 25 to August 3 of last season are the only players in the last 15 seasons to put up all three numbers in an eight-game span.

 Chicago has hit 32 home runs in its last 10 games, seven more than any other team since August 16. Only two teams in MLB history have had more home runs in a 10-game span: the 2006 Braves (33) and 1977 Red Sox (33).

Rookie pitchers get nod as White Sox host Royals

CHICAGO (AP)  As soon as bat met ball, Luis Robert knew. The prized rookie watched as his first game-ending home run sailed over the wall and the White Sox once again grabbed a share of the AL Central lead.
Robert belted a three-run drive in the 10th inning that gave the Chicago White Sox a 5-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.
