 At 9-20, this is Boston's worst start to a season since 1966 (8-21) -- the Red Sox won the AL Pennant in 1967. The Red Sox have allowed 48 home runs this season, their most through 29 games in franchise history.

 Toronto is back above .500 after dropping two straight. The Blue Jays are 7-2 since August 17 with 15 home runs, second most in the American League behind the White Sox (24).

 The Red Sox took two of three games in their first series with the Blue Jays from August 7-9 at Fenway. Since 2017, Boston is 41-19 (.683) against Toronto, its second-best record against any AL opponent (15-5 against Texas).

 Despite going without a hit in his most recent two outings, Rafael Devers is still hitting .323 with a .944 OPS in his last seven games, including hitting .438 with runners on. In his first 20 games of the season, Devers batted .182 (.162 with runners on) with a .566 OPS.

 Teoscar Hernandez has homered in three of his last five games and leads the team in home runs (10) and OPS (.974, among qualifiers). The last Blue Jay to lead his team outright in home runs and OPS was Josh Donaldson in his 2015 MVP campaign.

 A Blue Jay starter has not received a decision since Tanner Roark won on August 19. Toronto has had 20 decisions by relievers this season, tied for the most by any team (with the 2020 Rays) through 27 games in the modern era.

The Boston Red Sox will try to win a series against the Toronto Blue Jays for the second time this season Wednesday night at Buffalo in a game between teams with muddled pitching situations.
The Red Sox used a six-run sixth inning to take the opener of the three-game series 9-7 Tuesday night. They won two of three against the Blue Jays in Boston Aug. 7-9.

Pitching a concern as Red Sox, Jays continue series

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP)  Rowdy Tellez drove in four runs, and the Blue Jays bullpen provided Toronto's injury depleted group of starters a much needed rest.
And yet overshadowing Toronto's 9-1 route of the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night were questions of whether both teams should have played as opposed to sitting out and joining other teams across several sports to protest this past weekend's shooting by police of Jacob Blake, a Black man, in Wisconsin.
