The Twins took three of four from the Indians in their first meeting of the season from July 30-Aug. 2, limiting Cleveland to four runs in the series. It was the fewest runs Minnesota permitted in a four-game series since yielding four to the Boston Red Sox from July 5-7, 1965, and the fewest runs the Indians scored over a four-game set since plating four versus the New York Yankees from June 30-July 2, 1972.

The Twins are 10th in MLB in runs scored with 140, but have plated a major league-best 87 runs in innings 1-4. They have an MLB-best .860 OPS through the first four innings. From the fifth inning on, their OPS drops to .629 - fifth worst in the majors.

Miguel Sano had two more doubles in Sunday's 5-4 win over the Royals, giving him eight doubles in his last seven games. The only other Twin to have at least eight doubles in a seven-game span since 2000 was Joe Mauer, who had nine from May 6-12, 2013.

Kenta Maeda is making his first start Monday since taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the Brewers on Tuesday. Maeda, who tossed six shutout innings against Cleveland on Aug. 1, has allowed eight runs in 31 2/3 innings - the first Twins pitcher to permit eight or fewer runs in at least 30 innings in his first five games for Minnesota since Bill Krueger (7 runs, 31 1/3 IP) from April 9-May 2, 1992.

The Indians' top five batters in their lineup are hitting .246 - 21st in the majors. The production from the bottom of the order drops off significantly, as the six through nine hitters are batting a major league-worst .154.

Franmil Reyes has a 1.136 OPS with runners on base but just a .595 OPS with none on. That difference in OPS with runners on base to nobody on of .541 is the fourth biggest drop-off by a qualifying batter in the AL.

If the form shown so far this season overall and during their first series holds true, runs will likely be at a premium when Cleveland begins a three-game series at home Monday against Minnesota.
The Twins and Indians have had two of the best pitching staffs in all of baseball so far during this abbreviated season, which has them both in contention for the American League Central Division title and a playoff spot.

Twins, Indians fight for control of AL Central

CLEVELAND (AP)  The Minnesota Twins are halfway to another division title. Now if they could just get fully healthy.
Miguel Sano hit a two-run homer and Nelson Cruz connected for a solo shot to lead the injury-riddled Twins to a 3-2 win over the Cleveland Indians on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series between the AL Central's top teams.
