 Pittsburgh has won two of three games in each of the last three series between these teams (2012, 2015 and 2018). The Pirates' 28-19 (.596) record in interleague play since 2018 is fifth best in the majors.

 The Pirates are playing their first game since Friday due to the cancellation of games in their series with the Reds (COVID-19). Pittsburgh has an MLB-worst 4-14 record, the second worst in franchise history through 18 games in a season (3-15 in 1952).

 Cleveland is coming off a three-game sweep of the Tigers in Detroit. The Indians have an MLB-low 2.68 ERA this season, and have allowed five or fewer runs in all but two games.

 Franmil Reyes has seven multi-hit games in his last nine played, including his first multi-homer game of the season in Sunday's 8-5 win over Detroit. Reyes was batting .163 before August 6, compared to an MLB-best .515 since then (17/33; minimum 30 PA), with four homers and 11 RBI in nine games.

 Over his last nine interleague starts, Carlos Carrasco is 5-1 with a 2.13 ERA, 73 strikeouts (11.9 per 9 IP) and just two home runs allowed. He ranks second among AL ERA qualifiers this year with 12.1 strikeouts per nine innings, to teammate Shane Bieber (14.0).

 Colin Moran has a team-high six home runs, but just nine RBI. He's hitting .273 with five home runs and a 1.079 OPS with the bases empty, versus .172 with one homer and a .536 OPS with runners on base.

The Pittsburgh Pirates might need a magic trick Wednesday to end the Cleveland Indians' four-game winning streak and break out of their own stretch of 12 losses in 14 games this month.
That is, they might need to hold the Indians to two runs or less in the second game of their three-game series at PNC Park.

Pirates hope to break out of slump against surging Indians

PITTSBURGH (AP)  Cleveland Indians catcher Roberto Perez challenged starter Aaron Civale to get through eight innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night to give the team's hard-working bullpen a break.
Civale did Perez one better, throwing the first complete game of his young career as the Indians rolled to a 6-1 victory. Civale (3-2) allowed just five hits against six strikeouts without issuing a walk, narrowly missing a shutout when Pittsburgh pushed across a run on Josh Bell's sacrifice fly in the ninth.
