 The Mets have won six of their last seven home games against Washington, with five of those wins coming by two or fewer runs. The teams split a two-game series last week at Nationals Park.

 New York is batting an MLB-best .284 this season with less than two outs, compared to a .184 average with two outs -- 28th in MLB. The Mets' .143 average with two outs and runners in scoring position is the second worst in the majors (Phillies, .083).

 Washington is 0-7 this season when scoring three or fewer runs, compared to 4-0 when scoring four or more. Going back to last season -- and including the playoffs -- the Nats have won 29 of their last 30 games when plating at least four runs.

 Over his last 10 games against the Mets, Juan Soto is batting .459 (17/37) with five homers, 11 RBI and a 1.589 OPS. The Nationals have won just two of those 10 games, however.

 Patrick Corbin has struck out eight batters in each of his first two starts of 2020, including last week's win over the Mets. Since 2005, the only Nationals to strike out eight or more in each of their first three outings of the season were Stephen Strasburg in 2010 (four straight) and Max Scherzer in 2015 (three).

 Pete Alonso is hitting .197 with two homers, six RBI and a .649 OPS. At the same juncture in his 2019 Rookie of the Year campaign (through 16 games), Alonso was hitting .339 with six home runs, 17 RBI and a 1.181 OPS.

Max Scherzer and the Washington Nationals hope the third time is the charm for the ace right-hander.
Scherzer, who has battled a sore right hamstring in his past two starts, is scheduled to take the mound for the Nationals on Tuesday night in the second game of a four-game series against the host New York Mets.

NEW YORK (AP)  Max Scherzer was grinding on the mound and grunting with each pitch, forced to work particularly hard just to get through the first two innings.
But he also looked healthy all the while - a wonderful sign for the Washington Nationals.
