 The Tigers open their home schedule against the Royals for the second straight season. In 2019, Detroit swept Kansas City in a three-game series to open its home schedule, en route to a 7-3 mark versus the Royals at Comerica Park.

 The Royals had the lowest batting average in MLB over the season's opening weekend, hitting just .158; their five runs tied for the lowest total among all teams (matched by the Mets and Rangers). Whit Merrifield (.300) and Salvador Perez (.273) were the only KC players to hit as high as .200.

 After a season-opening loss at Cincinnati, the Tigers defeated the Reds on Saturday and Sunday. Detroit hit only .186 in the three-game series but got six home runs from five different players. Detroit seeks its first three-game winning streak since its last three games of May 2019.

 C.J. Cron collected four hits over the weekend, three of them for extra bases -- including a pair of home runs. He was on base in six of 13 plate appearances and drove in four of Detroit's 10 runs. Cron is a career .302 hitter against KC pitching, with a .952 OPS.

 Mike Montgomery allowed a .315 batting average in 2019, highest among the 142 pitchers who worked at least 90 innings. He worked exclusively in relief as a Cub, pitching to a 5.67 ERA; in 13 outings with the Royals, all of them starts, he posted a 4.64 mark.

 Michael Fulmer's start on Monday will come 50 days shy of two years since his last big league outing on September 15, 2018. Fulmer had Tommy John surgery in March 2019 after a disastrous finish to his 2018 campaign: 0-7, 5.57 over his final 10 starts, all of which the Tigers lost.

For Michael Fulmer, it's more like a new beginning. Fulmer has not thrown a pitch in a regular-season game since Sept. 15, 2018. The 2016 American League Rookie of the Year missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

DETROIT (AP)  Maikel Franco hit two of Kansas City's six home runs, and the Royals pounded the Tigers 14-6 on Monday night, spoiling Detroit's fan-free home opener.
Whit Merrifield had three hits and three RBIs, finishing a triple shy of the cycle on a night when the Royals rallied from an early 5-1 deficit. Foster Griffin (1-0) won in relief, but he also had to leave his major league debut with a left forearm strain.
