 The Yankees (.569) and Nationals (.543) ranked first and fourth, respectively, in regular-season winning percentage in the 2010s. Neither club reached a World Series in the decade until last fall, when Washington defeated Houston in seven games to claim the franchise's first Series title.

 The Yankees have not opened a season in Washington since 1969, when they defeated the Senators at RFK Stadium, 8-4 (President Richard Nixon threw the ceremonial first pitch). This will be the 17th time that the Bronx Bombers open a season in Washington, the most for the franchise in any road city.

 With Houston last season, Gerrit Cole had 326 strikeouts and 142 hits allowed, a ratio of 2.30 K's to hits allowed. In MLB history, only one pitcher has ever had a higher such ratio in a season, minimum 100 innings -- Chris Sale in 2018 (2.32). Max Scherzer had a 2.13 ratio in 2017, fifth highest all-time.

 Max Scherzer, who defeated Cole in Game 1 of last year's World Series, has a career interleague strikeout rate of 12.09 per nine innings, highest in interleague history (minimum 100 innings). Since 2016, Scherzer has a 1.67 ERA against AL clubs, third lowest among pitchers with at least 50 interleague innings.
