 San Diego and Cincinnati begin their final series against each other after the Reds won three of four from April 18-21. The teams combined for just 23 runs in that series, with the Padres' pitching staff surrendering eight home runs. The Reds' staff had a 2.19 ERA in that series while striking out 49 batters.

 The Padres have bounced back from an 8-16 July to go 8-8 in August. That .167 increase in win percentage is the second highest in the National League (Col, +.227). Their increase from 3.92 runs per game in July to 5.25 (+1.33) in August is also second in the NL (Was, +1.83).

 The Reds' .480 slugging percentage and .821 OPS in August are their highest in any month this season, while hitting 29 home runs in 17 games. Their pitching staff, however, has given up 33 homers in August. Their opponent OPS of .827 and 5.39 ERA this month are also team highs.

 Eric Hosmer has an extra-base hit in five of his last six games with a slash line of .480/.500/.760 in that span. On the season, Hosmer ranks fourth in the NL among batting-average qualifiers by hitting .374 with runners in scoring position (Blackmon, Col, .412; Harper, Phi, .382; McNeil, NYM, .378).

 Sonny Gray, scheduled to start Tuesday for the Reds, has yet to allow a run in three starts in August. He has gone 2-0 this month while giving up seven hits in 18 innings for an NL-low .117 opponent batting average (min. 10 IP).

 Luis Castillo will take the hill Wednesday with a 6.00 ERA in his last five starts after posting a 2.36 ERA in his first 20 starts. In his last start, a 13-4 Reds loss to the Cardinals, Castillo gave up a career-high eight runs while tying career highs with nine hits and three home runs allowed.

Cincinnati has lost six of its last eight games and will turn to its prized trade deadline acquisition to start a three-game series off on the right foot against the visiting San Diego Padres on Monday night.

CINCINNATI (AP)  Francisco Mejia hit one off the foul pole. Manny Machado had another big hit off Trevor Bauer. The San Diego Padres were in position for a third straight victory with the NL's leading closer on the mound.
Kirby Yates came close to giving it up, but found the pitch he needed to finish it off.
