Washington took two of three games in the teams' last meeting in 2016. However, the Nationals/Expos have gone just 1-7 all-time in Detroit, with the lone win coming in June 2002.

The Nationals swept the Marlins in Miami and have won eight of 10 to get back to .500 on the season. It is the 35th time they've been at exactly .500 since the start of last season, most in baseball in that span; the Giants rank second at 25.

After a home sweep at the hands of the Rangers, the Tigers have lost seven straight at home, scoring just 13 runs over the losing streak. It's their second non-overlapping 7-game home span this season with 13 runs or fewer (also May 9-18); the last time they had multiple distinct spans in a season was 1976.

Since 2017, Anthony Rendon is slashing .327/.372/.685 in 42 interleague games. His 1.057 OPS in such games ranks second among all players with at least 150 PA in that span, behind only Mike Trout (1.148).

After hitting .305 in May, Brandon Dixon is batting just .195 in 22 June games. That .110 decrease is sixth largest in the AL among players with at least 50 PA in each month.

Detroit will face two former Tigers in the series with Anibal Sanchez scheduled to start on Friday and Max Scherzer getting the nod on Sunday. Sanchez has never faced the Tigers in his career, while Scherzer earned a complete game win in his one start against the Tigers since leaving Detroit in 2016.

Already going through a mortifying stretch, the Detroit Tigers now have to deal with the resurgent Washington Nationals this weekend.
The Tigers have lost seven straight and 11 of 12 after getting swept in back-to-back series with Cleveland and Texas. They've lost 20 of their last 22 at Comerica Park, including the first three of a six-game homestand.
