The Pirates and Marlins will meet for the first time this season after the Pirates took four of five in 2018. The Pirates held the Marlins to just seven runs in the four wins, but gave up seven runs in the one loss in Miami.

Pittsburgh has lost seven straight games, the longest active losing streak in MLB. The Pirates also lost eight straight games earlier this season -- they are the only team to have two separate losing streaks of at least seven games this season.

The Marlins had scored one run or fewer in five of their last six games before beating the Cardinals on Wednesday, 9-5. The Marlins have scored one or zero runs in 24 games this season, nine more than any other team (Reds and Blue Jays, 15).

Bryan Reynolds went 3-for-4 against the Braves on Thursday and is now hitting .350 through 48 career games. The last MLB rookie to hit at least .350 through 48 career games was Yasiel Puig in 2013 (.372) (minimum 150 plate appearances).

Garrett Cooper was one double shy of a cycle against St. Louis on Wednesday, hitting a single, a triple and a home run with four RBI. Cooper is hitting .395 in June, fifth best in MLB (minimum 40 PA).

Trevor Richards has gone at least 5.0 innings while allowing two hits or fewer in each of his last three starts. He is the second pitcher in Marlins history to have three straight starts with 5.0+ innings and two or fewer hits (Al Leiter in 1996).

Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Steven Brault had a game plan -- and it worked.
On Friday night, Brault will face the host Miami Marlins when the teams open a three-game weekend series. Brault (2-1, 5.05 ERA) is coming off a strong performance in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, pitching a career-best 6 1/3 innings while allowing just two runs.
