 Pittsburgh lost 11-1 to Arizona yesterday, its fourth loss by at least 10 runs this season. This tied the Pirates with the Mariners for most losses by at least 10 runs in 2019. The Pirates are 3-10 against the NL West and 18-9 against the rest of MLB this season.

 The Padres were shut out by the Dodgers yesterday, San Diego's first game this season failing to score a run. However, the Padres have scored two runs or fewer 15 times, tied with the Pirates for second most in the National League (Marlins, 24).

 Josh Bell had his fourth straight multi-hit game yesterday, and he has nine multi-hit games during his MLB-high 15-game hitting streak. His 22 hits in May trail only George Springer (23) for most in MLB, and his 18 RBI this month trail only Alex Bregman (20) for most in MLB.

 Starling Marte's 10-game hitting streak is topped only by Josh Bell and Javier Baez (13) for the longest active streak in MLB, and he's hitting .344 in May after hitting .197 in April. Marte has scored a run in five straight entering this series and in 10 of his last 11.

 Eric Hosmer had three of his team's four hits yesterday. It was his fifth game with at least three hits this season -- the only National Leaguers with more are Nolan Arenado and Eduardo Escobar (seven apiece).

 Manny Machado is on a season-high eight-game hitting streak, and his nine extra-base hits in May are more than he combined for in March and April in less than half as many plate appearances. His 11 RBI in May match his 11 in April, while he's struck out eight times in May after having 25 in April.

Two pitchers on different paths at the moment will be matched Thursday night as the Padres host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opener of a four-game series at Petco Park in San Diego.
Right-hander Trevor Williams, who was born and raised in San Diego County, will again be asked to take the stress off the Pirates bullpen while Padres lefty Eric Lauer will be looking to rebound from the worst start of his young career while seeking to snap a personal three-game losing streak.

SAN DIEGO (AP)  Ian Kinsler hit a mighty three-run homer to put the San Diego Padres ahead of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and then had a profane outburst as he crossed home and then again in the dugout.
Many fans on social media felt it was directed at them, and manager Andy Green said it ''was not the right response.''
